Suite Curriculum

We follow the EYFS framework, which is statutory in many countries around the world, but we enhance it with an international twist to meet the needs of all our students. Our curriculum is delivered through a multi-sensory, play-based approach where our students will sing, dance, experiment, paint, read, construct and generally have a wonderful time.

We maximise our wonderful, purpose-built Foundation Stage Playgrounds which act as an extension of the classroom, to expand the range of activities our students can access on a daily basis.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (Preschool, Nursery & Reception) has 7 areas of learning and development:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We pride ourselves on our excellent partnerships between parents and educators in which regular communication and mutual support is fundamental.

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and here at Baby Steps, we ensure every student reaches their full potential.

Key Stage 1 – Years 1 & 2 (ages 5 to 7)

Our Key Stage 1 curriculum is designed to keep our students interested and engaged in their learning and to ensure that there is continuation and progression from our Early Years programme. Our broad and balanced curriculum adapted to our local setting ensures progression and continuity for your child and is enhanced with trips, art projects, theme weeks and specialist teaching that is adapted each year to meet the needs and interests of the current students.

Physical development is important at this age and our students dance, take part in and team games. Our classrooms are bright and engaging, reflecting the current unit of work and the student’s continuous learning. Literacy and numeracy tools cover the walls, immersing children in language and acting as scaffolding to reinforce concepts.

We teach maths in a purposeful, practical way and students will use play and exploration to acquire mathematical skills. A large majority of mathematical work is hands-on, and learning happens in many different contexts around the classroom and outside.

We involve you in your child’s learning wherever possible and offer workshops so you can support your child’s learning at home. Students receive some homework in these years predominantly in numeracy and spelling.

The children will be expected to take an internal SAT exam (based on past SAT) so as to measure the children’s attainment in maths, reading, and grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS).

The subjects include:

  1. Maths
  2. English
  3. Science
  4. History
  5. Geography
  6. Computing
  7. PE

  9. Information and Communication Technology (ICT),

Our Key Stage 2 is an enjoyable time for students, as they begin to acquire more knowledge and skills such as independent learning, reflection and self-assessment. We encourage our students to be academically inquisitive and to continue to develop as independent learners, showing initiative and leadership skills

During Key Stage 2, our students make more use of specialist facilities, and subject areas like Science and Languages are developed. We create a learning environment in which students are pushed to extend and challenge their learning; to analyse and reflect; to take risks; and to develop intellectual confidence.

Students in these years learn the full range of subject, including English (Literacy, Handwriting, Reading and Listening), Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Music, Drama, Geography, Art, Physical, Social and Health Education, Languages and Physical Education.

Our scientists will carry out science experiments and participate at mathematics and English competitions. We invite artists to visit the school to work with our students and instruct the in musical and dramatic performances.

The children will be expected to take an internal SAT exam (based on past SAT) so as to measure the children’s attainment in maths, reading, and grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS). The children are tested on curriculum content from Years 3-6 across six test papers lasting under four hours in total.

The children also have the option to write the Cameroon First School Leaving Certificate Examination.
